Topics that may be covered in a CPD training day:
This day course, delivered in person, provides an introduction to, and awareness of, improving the energy performance and the retrofitting of traditional and historic buildings. It will include: 

• Climate change – dealing with it in a sustainable way 
• Why it is essential to understand different building types at the outset  
• The meaning of retrofit and energy efficiency - what they entail and what they can achieve  
• Retrofitting to reduce carbon production and mitigate the impact of climate change 
• The process of energy efficiency and retrofit following the IHBC Toolbox 
• Significance and heritage impact assessments - being proportionate  
• EPC’s what they are, their reliability and risks! 
• The use of decision-making tools  
• Understanding the reasons for a ‘performance gap’ 
• Applying guidance and Standards such BSI’s PAS2030:2019, PAS2035: 2019,  PAS2038:2021, BS7913: 2013, BS EN 16883: 2017 along with BS 40104, the new British Standard on retrofit assessment to be published in 2023. 
• The new Joint Position Statement on dealing with moisture in traditional buildings applied to energy efficiency improvements and retrofit (produced by the RICS, PCA and Historic England and supported by the IHBC, SPAB, Cadw, HES and HED Northern Ireland).

About Professor John Edwards:
Professor John Edwards, formerly of Cadw and English Heritage, is both a practitioner as a Director of Edwards Hart Consultants and an educator that delivers training courses across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe.  His specialisms include climate change, retrofit, building pathology and building conservation, in which he is certified and accredited. John sits on the BSI’s Retrofit Standards Task Group and Cultural Heritage Committee and has authored and co-authored many publications, reports, training schemes and qualifications including guidance and standards. For example, leading on the development of BS 7913: 2013 and co-authoring the latest BSI standards on retrofit which includes the forthcoming new British Standard on retrofit assessment. He is also a Professor in Practice at University in Wales Trinity St.  

Professor Edwards also delivers a 2-day course on energy efficiency and retrofit of traditional buildings that achieves the only recognised qualification in the subject, and a 1-day course on the new Joint Position Statement on dealing with moisture in traditional buildings.

Topics that may be covered in a CPD training day:
'The seminar topics include looking at conservation philosophy from a structural engineering viewpoint, a brief look at how structures work, considering ways of avoiding structural interventions, what problems to look out for,  when to worry and when not to worry and some ways of dealing with structural problems.  The seminar is copiously illustrated with case studies and participants will better understand problems faced by structural engineers but also be able to spot when heavy handed solutions are being proposed.' About Ian Hume:
Ian Hume is a retired conservation accredited structural engineer with over 30 years experience. Ian worked for English Heritage, now Historic England, for 22 years during which time he spent 10 years as Head of the Conservation Engineering Branch and dealt with several major projects. Following this Ian was a sole practitioner consultant for over 10 years.

Ian has been teaching about the structural engineering aspects of conservation for many years, including conservation professionals, mature craftspeople and students undertaking Master's courses.

CPD training on the extent of listing, including the concept of curtilage, in the context of listed buildings and heritage assets, is currently provided by Dr Charles Mynors Barrister FRTPI FRICS IHBC FICFor (Hon).

Identifying and recording heritage assets – world heritage sites; scheduled monuments; listed buildings; challenges to listing; the extent of listing; what is included; curtilage; cases of doubt; conservation areas; historic parks and gardens; non-designated assets.
Repair, maintenance, finance and public acquisition – duties of owners and occupiers; grants and loans; taxation; powers of public authorities; acquisition by agreement; compulsory purchase; s.215 notices.
Works affecting listed buildings and other heritage assets – works to scheduled monuments; works to listed buildings; need for planning permission; listed building consent; demolition in conservation areas; religious buildings; submission of applications; determination of applications (procedure); appeals; other remedies.
Matters to be considered – works affecting world heritage sites; works affecting ancient monuments; demolition of listed building; other works to listed buildings; works affecting setting of listed building; enabling development; demolition in conservation area; other works affecting conservation areas; religious buildings.
Unauthorised works – enforcement action; appeals; injunctions; prosecution; sentencing; confiscation orders.

About Dr Charles Mynors:
Dr Charles Mynors is a qualified town planner and chartered surveyor, and worked as a historic buildings officer in local government before he was called to the Bar in 1988. He then practised as a planning barrister for 26 years; appearing in court and at inquiries in relation to cases involving historic buildings and areas; he is now a bencher of the Middle Temple, following 20 years on its Estates Committee. He has written five editions of the leading textbook, Listed Buildings and Other Heritage Assets, most recently with Nigel Hewitson – a new (sixth) edition is due out in 2023 Charles lectured on historic buildings law for many years at Oxford Brookes University; he continues to lecture at the University of Bath, and also at seminars for practitioners.

Charles’s long-standing involvement in planning law reform resulted in an invitation to join the Law Commission in 2016, where he was the principal author of its Consultation Paper and Final Report on Planning Law in Wales; he is currently working closely with the Welsh Government to produce a new suite of simplified planning legislation. He is a distinguished ecclesiastical lawyer, and served as the Chancellor of the Diocese of Worcester from 1998 until 2020. He is also the author of Changing Churches: A Guide to the Faculty System, a second edition of which is coming in 2024.

• Events will be organised and promoted as local IHBC Branch events and will include as standard:
• Introductions to IHBC services and practice support
• Digital CPD certificates to register compliance with IHBC standards, and
• Feedback forms, to determine success in different CPD approaches.

• Format: Learning will focus on expert-led, practice-based sessions that offer insights, learning and solutions based on:
• First-hand knowledge of practical, real-life case studies and experience
• Substantial and open opportunities for ‘questions and answers’ and similar interaction between delegates and lead
• Networking, including informal networking over refreshments.

The primary learning experience will include the chance for delegates to explore practical issues under and alongside direct and expert guidance.

• Learning Outcomes: Seminars will be designed and developed to ensure delegates can achieve at least an ‘understanding’ of the practice content, that is an ‘Aware’ level of practice as defined by the IHBC.  However the interactive and authoritative nature of the event may allow more experienced practitioners secure a ‘Capable’ level of practice in the specific topic.
• Priority CPD content: Practice areas specified in the pilot reflect a range of currently recognised IHBC priorities.  Feedback forms will be used to gather structured survey data on event benefits and future priorities for new content, in which ‘design’ and ‘finance’ are already noted as leading issues.  NB: Suggestions for further developments of and from the pilot also may be directed towards the Education Committee (Andrew Shepherd, Chair: education@ihbc.org.uk), which will lead on the developing the initiative.

Host Branches Responsibilities

• In agreement with, and with the assistance of, the National Office, the hosting Branch or local lead should:

The IHBC’s National Office will:
