As a unitary authority, the Royal Borough has a rich heritage in both historic town and rural
settings. We are looking for someone who wishes to develop their career in this key area of work.

You would join a small team dealing with a variety of work, including advising on the impact of development proposals on listed buildings and conservation areas, providing design guidance, and giving advice to owners on repair and maintenance of listed buildings. The team is also responsible for the production of conservation area appraisals, and contributes to the production of the local development framework.

There is some flexibility within the team as to which areas your work is concentrated on, depending on your particular skills and experience. The post is career graded and is therefore suitable for both recent graduates wishing to gain work experience within a specialist team, or for someone with relevant work experience who wishes to deal with more challenging projects. To be appointed at the higher level of the post, you will be expected to be confident to work independently, for example in dealing with complex listed buildings works, or providing design advice on major development schemes. You would also be expected to represent the council at hearings and inquiries on such matters, and deputise in the
absence of the team manager.

Ideally, you will have a degree or diploma in Town Planning or a related discipline and have, or be working towards, professional membership (RTPI, IHBC, RIBA), and be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience of specialist work in the historic environment, preferably with a local planning authority. In addition, a qualification or experience in Urban Design would be an advantage.

Applications are invited for two permanent appointments within the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland to join a lively team responsible for recording Scotland’s Built Heritage.

The first post will concentrate on researching, investigating and analysing buildings and building types that are under threat as part of RCAHMS’ statutorily defined duty (Section 7(2)(B)(C) Planning (Listed Buildings And Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997). (Post Ref E/03/08)

The second post will focus on urban settlement across Scotland and demonstrate how towns and cities have developed over time by undertaking fieldwork, research and analysis of maps, photographs and drawings. (Post Ref: E/04/08)

For both posts you will require a degree, or equivalent experience, in architectural history or a related subject, coupled with excellent research and writing skills, and a proven track record in project management and delivery. A full, clean, current UK driving licence is essential as you will be required to undertake fieldwork throughout Scotland, including overnight stays where necessary.
