Higher Education at Work – High Skills: High Value Consultation Events
Thursday, 3 July - 09:30 - 16:00
Venue: Hilton London Paddington |
High level skills are absolutely essential to the economic
and social well-being of this country. The Government wants as many people as
possible to experience higher education – to help them to unlock their talents
and prosper individually as well as contributing to economic growth.
In April this year Bill Rammell, Minister of State for Lifelong Learning,
Further and Higher Education, launched a consultation on this subject, "Higher
Education At Work – High Skills: High Value", beginning a period of extensive
public and stakeholder engagement. This consultation is intended to produce
ideas on the sort of changes that need to be made to produce more, and more
employable graduates and raise the skills of those already in the workplace.

Heritage Skills Initiative
July: Various
|
The North East has a rich and
diverse heritage and its future, along with regional tourism, employment and a
sense of place for those who live here, is literally in the hands of those who
care for it. ....
There has been long and growing concern at the loss of traditional skills and
the impact of that loss on the cultural heritage sector. ...
The pilot year of the Heritage Skills Project demonstrated, through a series of
pragmatic partnership programmes, the North East’s ability and desire to provide
action. ...
Through further funding from English Heritage, National Heritage Training Group
and European Social Fund we are able to increase the programme tenfold this year
to 63 days of exciting skills related activities and look forward to seeing many
of you at the events, taster days, lectures and hopefully the Heritage Skills
Fair in July.

Urban Design - Masterclass Series
8 July
Tall buildings
|
London
needs good urban design. As a world city, it competes with cities
renowned for the quality of their public spaces, streets, parks and
buildings. This drive for quality needs to happen in the suburbs as
much as in the tourist hot-spots. All London’s citizens deserve to
live, work, learn and play in well designed, easy to use places.

Century Glass Painting’ held at Glaziers’ Hall in 2005. The
conference will present an historically considered overview of the
far-reaching developments in stained glass which took place throughout

century, from which we have enough distance to examine it with some
objectivity.

era in the UK

20th century glass in Germany

and Charles Rennie Mackintosh
• Martin Harrison – The persistence of Gothic: post-War stained glass
in the UK and beyond
• Wilhelm Derix with Andrea McKay – Modern German stained glass:
Schreiter, Schafrath, Poensgen, Klos
• Patrick Reyntiens OBE – The vital exchange: the interconnection of
vision, imagination and teaching which has benefited both the arts of
painting and stained glass
• Alex Beleschenko – trained in the 1970s – influences and context of
his development (evening lecture)

series of one, two or three day hands-on courses in traditional
building skills. The courses aim to address the declining numbers of
people trained in traditional craft skills and to raise awareness of
the importance of protecting our historic buildings by using the
appropriate methods and materials to repair and conserve them.
The courses are run from our workshop at Cressing Temple but where
possible we use live sites throughout the county. Our tutors are all
excellent craftsmen
who run their own businesses using their skills every day, and have a

The Twentieth Century Society
Understanding Twentieth Century Buildings - A Short Course
11, 18, 25 September 2008 |
The 20th century saw the construction of buildings unlike
any that had come before. War, politics, economics, innovations in production
and materials and social change all played their part in shaping modern Britain.
The legacy is large and whilst appreciation of the very best of buildings and
designs of the period is now widespread, professionals and decision makers often
lack specialist knowledge in this field which has become vital for conservation
professionals to understand.

the central role of conservation in the presentation and protection of
the world's cultural heritage. It will explore the many ways that
heritage professionals engage in this sharing worldwide, whether that
involves people going to see that heritage or the heritage itself
