Next Committee meeting: Wednesday 1 October 2008
Please do not hesitate to contact any of us.
Membership
London’s membership is diversified with representatives from most 33
boroughs, national organisations and associations; and from architects,
planners and other professionals of the buildings industry.
This diversity is very important to our membership. It gives us the
opportunity to share and develop our knowledge by having meaningful debates,
presentations and discussions. In addition to a regular newsletter, we have
set-up a Yahoo group e-mail to communicate efficiently between members.
With our members continuous professional development in mind, we organise
various events, visits, talks and a yearly conference. Your input to any of
those is encouraged, so please do not hesitate to contact any of the
committee members to discuss your suggestions.
Finally, if you are interested in becoming a member and would like to
discuss the entry requirements informally, please contact us.
Events
The visits will offer you something different from
the standard ones for the general public, as we get someone who is, or has been,
closely involved with the building, collection or project to ensure our members
get the full benefit of the visit.
In the pipeline:
- visits to Strawberry Hill, St Martin’s-in-the-field and given the popularity
we are
looking at re-organising a second visit to St Paul’s cathedral.
If you wish to suggest a speaker or subject for a talk, or have worked on a site
you could take a group on, please contact our events organiser, Kate
Ainslie-Williams on 020 7735 6088.
Past events:
Visits to historic houses such as:
- St Paul’s Church, Deptford and Fulham where Brian Lofthouse of Thomas Ford
Partnership lead the tour,
- St Paul’s Cathedral – talk and tour by Martin Stancliffe of Purcell Miller
Tritton, resident architect,
- Chandos House, built by Robert and James Adam – talk by Philip Little of ESA
Design Ltd
Days out to:
- Kew Gardens Marianne North Gallery and the Pagoda and Kew Palace with tour and
talks by Donald Insall and Harvey Murray-Smith, house manager of the Palace,
- Danson House, visit with Richare Lee of English Heritage followed by a visit
to the Red House, Bexley Heath.
Lectures:
- Conservation of Cinema Theatres by Richard Gray of Cinema Association
- Brunel’s newly discovered bridge at Paddington Station – visit and talk by
Graham King of Westminster Council
- Funerary Monuments by Dr Roger Bowdler, English Heritage
Conservation Officers Group (COG)
Our next event will take place in Westminster on
the 22nd May and has been developed in partnership with HLT and EH. It
will include presentations on the heritage protection, HAP and
subterranean developments. It will be followed by the IHBC London
branch AGM.
For full programme please view this attachment.
Our previous COG event was on the ecclesiastical
exemption with talks and workshops by Nick Chapple (English Heritage),
Peter Aiers and Charles Smith (Diocese of London), Colin Kerr (Molyneux
Kerr Architects) and Timothy Jones (London Diocese Advisory Committee
and English Heritage).
We regularly organise a
special seminar on a specific subject especially relevant to
conservation officers. If you wish to help coordinating the next COG
seminar, please contact the secretary or chairman.
Annual Conference
For the last few years, the branch has organised
very successful one day conferences.
Tall Storeys
This year’s conference will be on the controversial subject of tall buildings
and will take place on the 14th October 2008. Our annual conference is very well
subscribed, so book the date in your diary and make sure to reserve your place
as soon as you receive the invitation.
